In 2010 Northern Divers (Engineering) Limited was contracted to lay and position 1300 concrete mattresses into one of the UK most environmentally challenging environments. Battling zero visibility, strong tides, sub zero temperatures the works were finally completed in December 2011 in the centre of one of the UKs most busiest shipping channels. The work involved 2 teams of divers working 24hrs to enable them to dive every six hours at the slack water period to enable the fronded mats to be laid safely in position. Areas of pipe which had become severely scoured were built up with 50mm stone to 200mm above the pipe level to enable the concrete fronded mats to be laid over the pipe. Within 24 hours of the fronded mats being laid the divers were reporting that 100 - 200mm of natural deposits had already been deposited by the fronds with the 150mm concrete mattress this gave 250mm of protection within 24hrs.

Thinking about becoming a diver? Here are our thoughts, to hopefully, put you on the right track. However, please bear in mind that diving is not as glamorous as you may think. It can be difficult at first, but with the correct attitude you can go a long way. 1. Think long and hard before you make the commitment 2. SCUBA diving is a great added bonus to be interested in prior to taking the course 3. You don’t have to be an Einstein. Infact, anyone with a common knowledge and plenty of practical experience is much preferred 4. We try to advise young starters to have a trade before they start the course (for example, electrician, plumber, welder etc). This can also assist later in your career, and can also act as a fall back when work is quiet 5. Leaving the forces? Make sure you have the right qualifications, and check on further qualifications that can be gained before leaving to assist in your future career Qualifications to get you started: Enthusiasm, determination, a positive attitude and the ability to work alone along with your diving qualification will get you far.
